HOW TO MEASURE
Below are step by step instructions on how to measure a house for roller shutters.
1. Define the Area:
If measuring a house lot, it is important to start at the front door and follow around the house in a clockwise manner. This is to ensure our technicians know which windows you have measured and ensures they understand where each roller shutter is being installed.
2. Identify the Wall Type:
Houses are constructed with various materials and each requires specific screws for the appropriate fitting. Please ensure you identify the structure of the home when placing an order. Potential structures include; Brick, Double Brick, Weatherboard or Cladding, Rendered Blueboard, Render Foam.
3. Identify the Window Type:
Identify the type of window that the shutter will be installed upon. This is critical as we may need to take special consideration during installation or provide extra instruction on how to best prevent damage to your shutter or to ensure the home owner can open the window following installation.
4. Select Shutter Fitting Type:
There are two ways a shutter can be installed, 'On Wall' (OW) or 'Reveal Fit' (RF). Remember there is no room for error with 'Reveal Fit' and that most windows will be quite fine with 'On Wall'. Because of this we encourage our customers to use 'On Wall' for their clients.
5. Measuring:
If measuring for quoting purposes, near enough can be good enough. However, if you are measuring and installing yourself, accuracy is vital, as errors can be very costly and will impact on your return and reputation.
Measuring for Quotes
For an 'On Wall' installation, measure the width of the window opening and add 100 mm to accommodate the width of the guides. Measure the height of the window opening and add 200 mm for the potential pelmet size. This will give you an accurate enough measurement for quoting purposes.
Measuring for Installation - Things to Remember
- Measurements should be taken from two points on each axis, left and right for height and top and bottom for width.
- All measurements need to be taken in millimeters.
- Take the larger measurement for 'On Wall' and the smaller measurement for 'Reveal fit'.
- Be aware of slanted bricks at the bottom of the window as they will affect how the shutter will be installed and how you will measure.
- If the window is going to be 'On wall' please be aware that if there is not enough room above the window for the box, it will hang over the window sill.
- Always look for obstacles that may prevent you from installing the roller shutter. There are various packers available on request for bringing forward the roller shutter off the window frame.
6. Repeat the above steps for each window
